∙ 12y agoBefore 1968, the country celebrated Lincoln's birthday on Feb. 12 and Washington's birthday on Feb. 22. Lincoln's birthday was not so big in the South and was never a federal holiday. Washington's birthday was a federal holiday and was celebrated on his birthday until it was decided in 1968, while Lyndon Johnson was president, to move such holidays to Monday. After that, people, particularly advertisers, gradually started calling it Presidents' Day, however, the actual name of the federal holiday is still Washington's Birthday.
