The French monarchy was overthrown in 1789. Mobs of people in Paris, who were hungry and angry with the policies of King Louis XVI stormed the Bastille, a prison and released prisoners. He and his wife were arrested by French revolutionaries.
From 1789 until 1799 when the coup of the French Consulate happened.

The Bastille, in Paris. The most celebrated prison to be stormed was the Bastille.
The year of 1789 was the beginning of the French Revolution. There was a famine and rioters stormed the prison called the Bastille. The revolution led to the execution of French King Louis 14th and Queen Marie Antoinette. It was a bloody revolution and people of the noble stature were targets for execution. Eventually one of the famous revolutionaries, Robespierre was also executed.
The Bastille (the prison) is in Paris. You can still see the ruins from metro line 5.
