Simple and facilitated diffusion are a part of passive transport. This refers to the movement of molecules, atoms and ions across the cell membrane. In both of these processes, molecules move from areas of high concentration to areas of lower concentration because equilibrium is trying to be maintained in living organisms. Simple diffusion just happens randomly and without any aides. Facilitated diffusion uses proteins in the cell membrane to guide polar molecules and ions in and out of the membrane (always to areas of lower concentration) and DOES NOT require ENERGY.

Only active diffusion requires energy.

What does active transport and facilitated diffusion have in common?

Both active transport and facilitated diffusion are methods of moving substances across cell membranes. Active transport requires energy input to move substances against their concentration gradient, while facilitated diffusion does not require energy and moves substances along their concentration gradient with the help of transport proteins.

Why does active transport require more energy than osmosis or facilitated diffusion?

Active transport requires more energy than diffusion this is because during active transport, the molecules are being transported against and toward the concentration gradient whereas in diffusion, the molecules go from the concentration gradient.

What are some characteristics of facilitated diffusion?

Facilitated diffusion is a passive process that involves the movement of molecules across a cell membrane with the help of transport proteins. It does not require energy input. This type of diffusion is selective, meaning that only specific molecules can pass through the membrane with the assistance of transport proteins.

Facilitated diffusion depends on?

Facilitated diffusion depends on the presence of specific transport proteins in the cell membrane that help to transport specific molecules across the membrane. These transport proteins facilitate the movement of molecules down their concentration gradient, without requiring energy input from the cell.

How do facilitaed diffusion and active transport differ?

Facilitated diffusion involves the movement of molecules across a cell membrane with the help of a specific protein carrier, while active transport uses energy in the form of ATP to transport molecules against their concentration gradient. Facilitated diffusion does not require energy input, whereas active transport does.

Do cells gain and then use energy through facilitated diffusion?

Cells do not gain energy through facilitated diffusion. Facilitated diffusion is a passive process in which molecules move across the cell membrane from an area of higher concentration to lower concentration with the help of transport proteins, without the need for energy input. Cells use energy through other processes such as active transport and cellular respiration to maintain their functions.
