Interesting question, which may be up to some debate. To my way of thinking, it may be the area around Rize, which is also known for its Kangal breed of dogs. Now, Kangal dogs are the only known breed of dogs recogized by the AKC from Turkey, and they are shepherd dogs, and originate from the Rize area. Ergo, Coban (Shepherd) salad must have originated from the same area.
