As you say "church" rather than "place of worship", i guess you're referring to Christianity. Traditionally, Catholics had the most ornate churches which were then taken over by protestants then completely whitewashed. If you want the most ornate places of worship, I would suggest Sikhism, but it is impossible to generalise on such a large scale.
