It would be the effect of the ideas from the Neoplatonic movement. The ideas challenged the very foundation of the controlling religion. Man no longer needed a priest or church to communicate with God or to read/own a bible. This break with the church allowed the arts to move away religious themes and figures and to bring new ideas. A good example of this is Michelangelo's Sistine paintings. He has man reaching and touching the hand of God. A few years before the very thought of man not needing the church would bring excommunication to the person who suggested such an idea.

Why is renaissance important to the renaissance?

It really wasn't important in the Renaissance, but it was just starting. When something is secular that means it discourages religion in government and other things. The Catholic Church was still very powerful in the Renaissance and it is the time that they still ruled the monarchs of Europe. The paintings in the Sistine that Michelangelo painted showing the Neoplatonic view of the world was truly revolutionary. Yet, the pope was still able weld power and most of the art shows a religious theme. The work of Da Vinci shows Mary with Jesus, St. Ann, and Michelangelo's David as well as the Pieta are all religious works.
