In 1607 about 100 English colonists arrived along the west bank of the James river in Virginia. They founded Jamestown on May 13, 1607. It was the first English settlement in North America.
Jamestown did not, and could not expand- it is an island in the James River. However, colonists moved to other places, and began farming there.
