South Carolina's State Rock is blue granite. State rock/stone/mineral/gem emblems are usually chosen to promote and advertise the resource. In this case, it's a beautiful, hard, durable stone, which can be used to make beautiful buildings, and it's probably fairly historically important, economically and architecturally.
