Pontius Pilate. He gave Jesus over to the Jewish leaders to be crucified, not because he belived Jesus to be guilty, but because he was afraid the Jewish leaders would cause more unrest in the region if he didn't. As the governorship of Judea was almost a punishment, he was looking to his own career when he made the decision.

∙ 13y agoIt wasn't the roman governor who sentenced JESUS to death but Pontius Pilate, the representative of the roman governor who sentenced JESUS to death. However, Pontius Pilate knew Jesus was innocent, so he came up with a way to help Jesus out. Every year for Passover, Pontius Pilate gave the Hebrew people a gift - he would let one prisoner up for execution go free. He gave the Hebrews an option between Jesus and another man, who was guilty. However, the Hebrew people were angry with Jesus and did not choose Jesus to be the one to go free.
Pontius Pilate then cleaned his hands with water and told the crowd who recommended to sentence JESUS to death that he is innocent from the blood of JESUS meaning that he, Pontius Pilate,will send JESUS to crucifixion as they asked him but he could not be blamed for obeying the crowd.
Also when the Pontius Pilate dipped his hands in the water bowl, it was a symbolic message says that jesus's innocent blood spilt was not his burden or sin or something to that effect.
Not mentioned in The Bible is the reason Pontius Pilate obeyed the crowd when he was so powerful. According to Historians of the day, Pontius Pilate was under pressure from his superiors. The Hebrews had several revolts under Pontius Pilate's watch, and Pontius Pilate was told that if another revolt happened, Pontius Pilate would be removed from his position. Since Jesus claiming to be God/God's Son/Son of Man, the Hebrews were extremely livid, as they considered this blasphemy and the greatest sin. Pontius Pilate was probably afraid that the Hebrews would revolt if he did not sentence Jesus to death.
