There aren't any safety rules specifically for working with clay. But you should always be aware of where you are, what you are doing, what is happening around you and how it might impact you.
I can remember two rules for science safety from when I was in school. One is to always wear safety goggles when working with chemicals or open flames. The other was to use your hand as a wand when smelling or whiffing chemicals. I learned the importance of that second one the hard way.
Clothes: Safety goggles must be worn etc.Instructions: Always make sure you know how to use equipment.Surroundings: Always be aware of hazards and those around you.Prevention: Mop up spills and make sure flames are visible when unattended.
Have monthly safety meetings, go over the important safety issues before beginning a project, have lots of training, communication, taking precautions, watching the weather reports, etc.
safety is the most important part. always were protective gear. but to be good you need to practice. and that requires falling to the ground. so be safe, and dont get discouraged. just PRACTICE!
