Galileo and Copernicus were two of the scientists to disprove Ptolemy's geocentric theory of the universe. The Ptolemaic theory stated that the center was earth.

Most of these people were religious, and because the scriptures supposedly said that the Earth was in the center of the universe (geocentric), they had to stand firm with their beliefs. Only scientists and astronomers believed in the heliocentric theory, and some of them would be excommunicated or almost executed if they weren't geocentric.
Nicolaus Copernicus, Johannes Kepler, and of course Galileo all had hands in challenging the geocentric model and promoting the idea of heliocentrism.
Aristotle believed in a geocentric model, where the Earth is at the center of the universe, with celestial bodies revolving around it.
Christoph Scheiner, and Johannes Kepler, were the astronomers who contributed to the destruction of the geocentric view of the universe.
