Explaining the "Seat"
The Hamza (ء) is an odd letter in Arabic since it does not script from either the left or the right. As a result it is required to take a "seat", which is another letter that allows the hamza to be represented, in all cases except when both of the following conditions are present: (1) the hamza is the last letter of the word and (2) the penultimate letter is a letter that does not script on the left, like ا، د، ذ، ر، ز، و letters. In those cases, such as the word maa2 (ماء), the hamza requires no seat
Seated Hamza Appearance
The hamza can sit on and alif أ a waw ؤ or a ya ئ. It will take an alif seat if both the vowel prior to the hamza and the vowel after the hamza are fat-ha َ or sokon ْ. The hamza will take a waw seat if the either the vowel prior to the hamza or after it is a domma ُ and neither is a kasra ِ.
