Before they opened it, or the week after? For various reasons the East Germans rarely if ever were able to get bananas - and one of the big reasons is the government used so much hard currency importing coffee.
Now, the week after is a different story: the food stores stayed open until all hours of the night - at the time, the law normally required they close by 6 p.m. - and the Ossis bought up all the produce in West Berlin the second it hit the shelves.
