The Grand Canyon is a "gorge" or "canyon" if you wish. Hence the name Grand Canyon. However, there are two "plateau's" on either side of the canyon which could be considered part of the GC, from a certain point of view.
It is 235 miles from Grand Canyon Village Arizona to the Canyon de Chelly Natiional Monument in Arizona and an interesting side trip.

Yes, evil knevil tried ot jump the Grand Canyon on a motorbike. Robert "Evil" Kneivel never made any attempt go over the Grand Canyon in any vehicle, nor did he ever attempt any motorcycle jump across any major canyon. He tried (and failed) to take a steam powered rocket across Snake River Canyon, which is hundreds of kilometers from Grand Canyon. His son, Robbie, did jump 228 feet over a 2500 deep side canyon of the Grand Canyon, outside the national park.
