Most Americans lived on the east side on the Appalachian Mountains in 1809.
Most people live on the western side of the Ural Mountains, which is in Europe, particularly in Russia. The eastern side of the Ural Mountains, in Asia, has a lower population density.
As with most continents, the most mountainous side of the Australian continent is the eastern side.
Mountains can block the flow of atmospheric moisture causing rain to fall on the windward side of the mountains. The leeward side is left dray forming a rain shadow desert. See the image above.

Most of the deserts of the United States are located on the western side of the Rocky Mountains. However, most of the Chihuahuan Desert is located east of the Rockies.
Mountains block moisture from crossing into the leeward side, forcing most rain to fall on the windward side of the mountain. The leeward side is considered as a desert.
In California, most precipitation falls on the western sides of mountains. As wet air blows in from the Pacific Ocean, its pushed up the mountains. The air cools as it is pushed up. Clouds form, and rain or snow falls.
