The Louisiana Purchase
Between 1810 and 1820, the southern states admitted to the Union were Louisiana (1812), Mississippi (1817), Alabama (1819), and Missouri (1821). Louisiana became the 18th state, followed by Mississippi as the 20th, and Alabama as the 22nd. Missouri's admission was part of the Missouri Compromise, which addressed the balance between free and slave states.
