There is more than one statue in Trafalgar Square but the most famous is the column with Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson on top. The square was laid out to celebrate his victory over the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on 21st October 1805. He is considered to be Britain's greatest naval commander but was mortally wounded during the battle.
