to annex the Oregon territory to 54 40 line/ used slogan 54 40 or fight!
Mexican
James K. Polk
The slogan of the campaign was not disavow by Polk. Polk pledged to settle the boundary of Oregon Territory with Britain.
PRESIDENT POLK
Fruitless in negotiations and diplomacy, he achieved his aims through war.
He promised to acquire Texas, California, and Oregon; to fix the federal treasury; and to only serve one term.
Maybe you are referring the campaign slogan, "Fifty-four forty or fight". Polk settled for quite a bit less without doing any fighting at that point.
President Polk sent troops to Mexico to seize the Oregon Territory, which began the Mexican War that the U.S. ultimately won to acquire Oregon.
Polk is the only US President to have kept all of his campaign promises, including his promise not to seek a second term. His most difficult one was the annexation of the Soutwestern territories from Mexico.
Polk's goal was simple. He wanted a country which stretched from sea to shining sea. By supporting Texas, a future conflict with Mexico was assured, and the US could then acquire Mexican territory between the US and the Pacific Ocean.
He promised to acquire california from Mexico, settle the Oregon dispute, lower the tariff, and only run for one term.
