Other translations, codices are consulted in order to try to gain the best understandings of the text and of variant readings of the text. The two most common are the Greek Septuagint (which is a Greek translation that in some places differs pretty significantly from the Masoretic text), and the Dead Sea Scrolls which are the oldest versions of the texts that we have, that are often used in an attempt to settle disputes between the Masoretic text and the Septuagint.
