There are 20,000 to 30,000 islands in the South Pacific. These are known as the Pacific Islands. They are divided in 3 areas: Melanesia, Micronesia and Polynesia.
Countries in the southern hemisphere such as Australia, New Zealand, countries in southern Africa, islands of the south Pacific, islands of the south Atlantic, and the countries of South America that are south of the equator.
Due south of the Hawaiian Islands lies the vast expanse of the South Pacific Ocean. There are no significant land masses directly south until reaching the Antarctic region, which is thousands of miles away. The closest populated areas would be islands like those in French Polynesia, but they are still quite distant to the south.
Three main areas in the coastal lowlands are wetlands, estuaries, and barrier islands. Wetlands are areas with saturated soil, estuaries are where rivers meet the sea, and barrier islands are long, narrow islands parallel to the mainland that protect the coast from erosion.

The Falkland Island group is the closest to the South Pole. They are located near the southern tip of South America in the south Atlantic Ocean.
