I think it's between Western Samoa (GMT - 11) and Fiji (GMT + 12).

- Correction:

It is between New Zealand and Samoa and it is a 24 hour difference during the Spring/Summer of New Zealand

- Fiji is 1 hour behind the time in New Zealand (during the later half of the year)

- New Zealand is the first country to see the sun come up on New Years. (Along with Antarctica which shares the same time as New Zealand )

UPDATES:

Western Samoa switched to the west side of the international date line in December 2011. Their offsets are now UTC + 13 hrs. during standard time and UTC + 14 hrs. during summer time or daylight saving time (the last Sun. of Sept. until the 1st Sun. of April, the same as New Zealand).

Currently the time zone that is farthest ahead is UTC + 14 hours, which includes:

  • Kiribati's Line Islands Time (LINT)
  • New Zealand's Tokelau Time (TKT)
  • Western Samoa Summer Time (WSST)

The inhabited time zone that is currently farthest behind is UTC - 11 hours, which includes:

  • New Zealand's Niue Time (NUT)
  • the United States' Samoa Standard Time (SST), which is shared by American Samoa, the Midway Islands, Jarvis Island, Palmyra Atoll and Kingman Reef

So the biggest time difference is 25 hours. I guess you could say that the biggest time difference belongs to, among others, New Zealand and New Zealand.

Baker Island and Howland Island, which are under the jurisdiction of the United States, are in UTC - 12 hours, but they are officially uninhabited.

What changed Columbus' world?

Not much. He was considered a failure. The biggest difference he made was he brought the New World and the Old World together for the first time. He was only a "tip of the iceburg" and for the Native Americans from 1492 on the world would never be the same.
