Solid ink printers. The ink is sold in "ink sticks" which melt in a tray for dispersal. Don't move those printers without powering them off for a couple of hours first! They ink will spill all over everything!
Xerox is a pioneer in this technology and are virtually the only company that sells printers with this ink. The ColorQube, Phaser and Workcentre Series printers all have models that can use ink sticks.

A laser printer uses a beam of light to generate text and images on to paper. The laser is used to create a negatively charged image on parts of the printer drum. The toner then sticks to the areas of the drum that is negatively charged before being transferred to paper.
A Laser printer uses a drum and toner. A laser negatively charges the drum (a big rotating tube) at certain points, making a mirror copy of the item to be printed. The drum rotates past a toner cartridge, in which are positively charged particles of toner. The positively charged toner is attracted to the negatively charged parts of the drum, and leaves the neutral space in between blank. The drum then presses onto a sheet of paper, transferring the image. A quick heat of the paper seals in the toner (That's why the paper is always warm when it comes out of the printer), and there you go, an image!
Printer nozzles are holes in the matrix which sprays small electrically charged droplets of ink onto paper usually when using ink jet printers.

The difference is the technology used in the printing. The dot matrix printer uses a matrix of needles that press through an inked ribbon to leave marks on the paper. The laser printer uses a roller system to leave charged area on the paper which attracts toner (fine particles of pigment) to stick to the paper. The dot matrix printer is largely obsolete nowadays; it has been replaced by laser/ink jet and thermal systems which are much quieter - making them more suitable for office and home use.
Printer paper is different from regular paper as it is more thicker to allow the cyan, magenta, and yellow inks to seep through the orifices that printer paper has.

In the back of your printer is a section you can open up and remove the paper. You have to feel around for the piece that snaps out.

Provided the paper (rag or wood pulp) is suitable to pass through the printer, any printer type can print on this paper.
The cartridges in laser printers contain toner that allows the print to show on the page. A laser printer works by having a laser directed at a photosensitive drum. Without the toner, charged particles from the drum would be transferred to the paper, but they would be colorless.
If you want to print text/graphics onto paper, you need a printer.
