Our bodies can detect the heat from infra-red light, and will convert some micro-waves directly into heat. Our eyes can (by definition) detect visible light.

Our bodies do not detect any EM radiation more energetic than visible until after that radiation has done damage to our bodies. That's why we get a tan from UV light, burns from x-rays, and radiation poisoning from gamma rays.

At what temperature heat energy is converted to light energy?

Black-body radiation is the type of electromagnetic radiation within or surrounding a body in thermodynamic equilibrium with its environment, or emitted by a black body (an opaque and non-reflective body) held at constant, uniform temperature. The radiation has a specific spectrum and intensity that depends only on the temperature of the body.

What links a suntan to the EM spectrum?

A suntan is caused by the release of the pigment Melanin in the skin. This is the body's defensive response to harmful Ultraviolet radiation that makes up part of the Sun's rays. Ultraviolet is part of the Electromagnetic Spectrum.

In which region of the electromagnetic spectrum is most of the outgoing radiation from earth?

Aside from all the radio signals generated by Man, the Earth radiates primarily in the Infrared portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. This consists of reflected and re-radiated solar heat and 'black body' radiation from the Earth itself. (The reflected radiation includes some components of shorter wavelength such as visible light, but the re-radiated component is essentially all infrared.)

What form of electromagnetic radiation is emitted by low temperature objects like the human body?

Infrared radiation is invisible to us and emitted by the human body.

Is radiation the direct transfer of energy by electromagnetic?

It's the emission of electromagnetic energy from something, not the transfer. That em-radiation could travel for ever across the universe, never interacting with anything ever again and it would still be radiation.________________________________________________________Not all radiation is electromagnetic engery. Electromagnetic energy is transfered by way of photons. Photons are emited through gamma radiation and black body radiation. Nuclear decay of alpha particles and beta particles (which are also considered radiations) are actual particles that have mass, and are not electromagnetic radiation.

What is a black body?

A black body is a theoretical body in physics, which absorbs all incident electromagnetic radiation and reflects none.

What specific body part should the Geiger counter be placed on so the radiation can be detected in the body of an affected person?

The stomach.

What is luminous source?

A body that can give off electromagnetic radiation (light) such as the Sun, a lightbulb, etc.

How is heat energy transferred through radiation?

Body heat is lost by radiation because the heat that is produced from the body, is given-off to the surrounding atmosphere. For example, where the body is heat and when you sit in front of a fan, the cool air from the fan blows the heat away.

Does candle light have a continuous light spectrum?

Yes. Candle light is an example of black body radiation.
