WWI, part of "Kitchener's Mob". An all out effort was made to stimulate enlistment,with hopes of forestalling the necessity of conscription, but eventually conscription had to be resorted to anyway. In the meantime as a spur to enlistment men from a given locality or profession were offered the inducement of entering and serving together. A very great many pals battalions were shot to pieces on the Somme in 1916, beginning July 1 and in the four months following, in their introduction to combat.
