The State Department had been infiltrated by Communists.

Senator Joseph McCarthy
No, that was Joe McCarthy, although they used similar tactics at times trying to find people who they thought were disloyal to their countries.
There were two main incidents that changed public opinion concerning McCarthy, both on television. One was Edward R. Morrow's "See It, Now" episode where he used news clips of McCarthy's own speeches to show his true nature. The other was a question asked by Joseph Nye Welch during one of the televised Senate hearings, "Have you no decency, Senator; have you no decency…?"
Senator Joseph McCarthy (1908-1957) led hearings in the Senate on communist influences in the US. He later chaired the Senate Committee on Government Operations and its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations in the US Senate beginning with his second term in 1953.McCarthy used his position to gain notoriety by hunting alleged Communists in the US government during the Cold War tensions with the Soviet Union. The fear of communist influences led many to support McCarthy. But when he tried in 1954 to challenge and coerce the leadership of the Army (whose former general Eisenhower was President), he was brought before his own committee and berated as cruel and vindictive. He was finally censured by the Senate in December, 1954.McCarthy died before the end of his second term, of alcoholism and hepatitis.
Joseph McCarthy, a Republican senator from Wisconsin who served in Congress from 1947 until his death in 1957.He used his position as chairman of the Committee on Government Operations and its Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations to launch investigations designed to document charges of Communists in government and was censured by the Senate on December 2, 1954, for behavior that was "contrary to senatorial traditions."See Biographical Dictionary of the United States Congress
Most historians credit TV journalist Edward R. Murrow with playing a major role in the downfall of Senator McCarthy. Murrow courageously stood up to McCarthyism on his famous TV show "See It Now" (which began as a radio show, "Hear It Now" and then moved over to television).
Martin Dies was the first chairman of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). The committee is nonetheless most associated with a man who was never a member of it, Senator Joseph McCarthy, who used some of the committee's tactics in his own Senate investigations.
The message that Miller is aiming to get across to the audience is that there is a parallel between the Salem society in 1692 and the American society in the 1950s. McCarthy was an American politician who served as a Republican U.S. Senator. During the Cold War, the people in America feared that the USSR would spread communism in the U.S.A. McCarthy used his senator power to accuse people he did not like for being communist. At first he accused artists, mainly actors and writers. They lost their jobs and nobody bought their books or watched their movies. The brave ones who tried to stop him were as well accused. Soon McCarthy gained lots of power over the U.S.A. but he made a big mistake when he used this power to accuse generals from the army that had more power than him. In the Crucible, Arthur Miller presents the exact same thing. Abigail gains power which is increasing just like McCarthy did. Everyone trusts her so she beguines accusing innocent people she does not like for witchcraft. McCarthy used his senator power to accuse people he did not like. If you opposed the Salem witch trials you were accused of being a witch. If you opposed the McCarthy investigations you were accused of being a communist. Arthur Miller clearly presents the parallel between Salem and the U.S. in the 1950s, and proves the readers that irrationality gets us nowhere.

McCarthyism is a term used to describe the making of accusations of disloyalty, subversion, or treason without proper regard for evidence. The period lasted roughly from the late 1940s to the late 1950s. It reflected heightened fears of communist influence on American institutions and espionage by Soviet agents. In February 1950 McCarthy asserted that he had a list of "members of the Communist Party and members of a spy ring" who were employed in theState Department. McCarthy was never able to prove this. McCarthy made other accusations of Communist infiltration into the State Department, the administration of President Truman,Voice of America, and the United States Army. He also used charges of communism, communist sympathies, or disloyalty to attack a number of politicians and other individuals inside and outside of government. With the highly publicized Army-McCarthy hearings of 1954, McCarthy's support and popularity began to fade.
John McCarthy. His methods became known as McCarthyism because he would accuse government officials of being disloyal, involved in communism, etc without any evidence.
