There were 6 Apollo missions that landed on the Moon; the final one was Apollo 17, which took place in December 1972.

The two astronauts who landed were Commander Gene Cernan and Lunar Module Pilot Harrison Schmitt, who became the first geologist on the Moon.

At the moment, it is expected that the next people to reach the Moon may do so around the year 2020.

In 1973, 3 missions were launched to the Skylab space station. Although they used Apollo spacecraft, they were named Skylab missions.

In July 1975, the first international manned space mission took place. Named the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, Aleksei Leonov - the first person to "walk" in space - and Valery Kubasov were launched in a Soyuz spacecraft from Baikonour, and then a few hours later, the Apollo crew were launched from Kennedy Space Center.

The Apollo crew comprised Tom Stafford, Deke Slayton and Vance Brand.

Although not given a number, this was the last Apollo mission. With the Space Shuttle coming into service from 1981, this was the last US spaceflight for over 5-1/2 years, and the final splashdown.
