Travel via the quieter inland highways.
Inland highway
From Sale, Victoria, to Brisbane, Queensland is a distance of 1718 km, travelling via the coastal route, which is the shortest way.
On the highway, via means to go "by way of". For example, if you are travelling from Sydney to Melbourne, you may ask "How far is it from Sydney to Melbourne via Canberra?", i.e. going through Canberra on the way.
The half way point when driving from Brisbane to Sydney, Brisbane is Armidale, Australia.
The travelling time between Sydney's CBD and Canberra via the Hume Freeway (the most logical way) is around 3 Hours and 45 Minutes. It is a distance of 287 kilometres. The air distance from Sydney to Canberra is 251 km and the flight takes around 23 minutes. The distance from Sydney to Canberra as the crow flies is about 251 km or 156 miles.
No. Australians tend to refer to Canberra as "Canberra". The ACT is the territory which encompasses Canberra and its suburbs and districts, but when people are visiting Canberra or flying down for business, they never refer to the ACT, but rather, they refer to Canberra..
In reference to the 2011 floods: There will be some back roads open, but generally this is an area one should avoid, as there is considerable flooding along the way.
This would be an unwise move. A large number of people live in the Gold Coast or along the Gold Coast-Brisbane corridor, and travel to Brisbane to work. Travelling in peak hour traffic each morning and afternoon can take in excess of the hour that it normally takes out of peak hour times. Traffic into Brisbane in the morning and out of Brisbane in the afternoon travels at an average of 35kph, according to the RACQ, Queensland's main motoring body. This means it can easily take two hours to commute one way.
That would depend on where in the world you are measuring or travelling from, and if you are travelling, it would depend on what way you were travelling.

If travelling from the Brisbane CBD to the Gold Coast, one does not travel on any toll roads. Nor are there toll roads if travelling from the Western suburbs (e.g. Indooroopilly, Sherwood, etc) to the Gold Coast. If one is so far west (e.g. Ipswich) that the Logan Motorway is the best option, the toll in 2014 is $4.13 each way. If travelling from any of the northern suburbs, there are a couple of options. There is the Gateway Motorway, which costs $4.13 one way and links directly to the main highway heading South to the Gold Coast. other options from various northern suburbs include the Airportlink M7, Legacy Way and the Clem 7 Tunnel, all of which cost different amounts, depending on where one exits and enters. Links to maps of these, as well as toll costs, can be found at the related link below.
