ETO, European Theater of Operations; PTO, Pacific Theater of Operations; CBI, China, Burma, India Theater of Operations. Europe had to MAIN Fronts; Western Allied Front (British/US) and the Russian (Soviet) Front. The Russian Front was Germany's main enemy and main threat. Germany was desperate to stop the Russians, as they showed no mercy to the Germans (retaliation). When they could, Germans surrendered to the Western Allies instead of the Soviets (Russians).
In layman's terms: After the First World War Germany got a really raw deal this was a contributing factor to the Second World War, so the U.S was afraid of a third one and they gave western Europe loans to ensure stability and prosperity. Also they were afraid that weak, poor European countries would be more susceptible to communist revolution.
Over the centuries, most western European countries have been allies and enemies (at different times, of course!) of Britain. The US is perhaps the largest ally of the UK.

The Marshall Plan.
That was NATO. Both Canada and the USA were founding members with the 10 western European countries in 1949.
Canada, the United States, and many European countries (western ones especially) are strong allies. They are part of many organizations. For example, NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization). Canada and the US are also participants in the Council of Europe (as are every country in Europe). The US and Canada are somewhat like offspring of Western Europe; they gained independence from this area (both the UK and France specifically) and based on their formation on this area (both the UK and France especially). As a result, they just stuck together.
