He sold a pamphlet to a bookseller in Augsburg that was critical of Napoleon. He was arrested, tried and convicted, sentenced to death by a military commission, denied the right of a defense and was shot the next day on 25 August 1806. He never disclosed the name of the pamphlet's author.
