Does the Declaration of Independence contain laws that govern the United States?

No, the Declaration of Independence is not a law making document. The US Constitution is the document that creates the laws that govern the US. The Declaration can only be used to help indicate the intent of the Constitution's framers, but does not create law.

Did Jefferson or Franklin have any illegitimate children?

It is said that each had at least one. Franklin is said to have an illegitimate son named William whom he and his wife eventually raised together along with their joint children. Recent genetic testing of the descendants of Sally Hemmings, a slave in the Jefferson household, indicate that the Hemmings descendants are related to Jefferson. Rumors that Jefferson had sexual relations with his slave had existed prior to his death, so many historians and experts take the genetic tests as proof that Jefferson and Hemmings did have joint children. This can't be proven at this point to an absolute certainty as the test only proved the descendants were descended from a member of the Jefferson family, not specifically Thomas Jefferson, but given the past rumors it seems likely that he too fathered at least one of Sally Hemmings' children.

Where was the empire created by the Portuguese in 1822?

The Portuguese Empire was created much earlier than 1822. It was created in the 15th and 16th centuries. There is the term Third Portuguese Empire which has been coined by historians to indicate a new phase of Portuguese colonialism and whose dates are given as 1825-1975. This followed the loss of Brazil in 1825. In September 1822 Brazil (by far the largest Portuguese colony) declared independence. This was followed by a war of independence which lasted until March 1824. In August 1825 Portugal recognised Brazil's independence. With the loss of Brazil, and having already lost it colonies in Asia, but a few naval bases, Portugal decided to concentrate its colonial efforts in Africa. The Portuguese government wanted to join their colonies in southern Africa (Angola on the west coast and Mozambique on the east coast) by penetrating inland to create corridor to connect them. In 1885 it produced the Pink Map, a document which represented Portugal's claim of sovereignty over this land corridor. This ambition was thwarted by British opposition. Nevertheless, Portugal still expanded their holdings in these two colonies.

When did you become the US?

It depends on how you look at it. We signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, but Washington took office as the first President in 1789. Officially, I would count from Washington forward, but most people use July 4th as the starting point. Jefferson was a brilliant writer and highly educated individual; therefore his writing and use of words was very purposeful. A review of the Declaration would indicate that in the first sentence of the final paragraph, Jefferson writes, "the Representatives of the united States" the lower case "u" in united was not a type-o or writing error but instead was used to explain that the Colonies were united in their declaration. At the time, the states acted independently of each other, they were not governed by a "Central" or "Federal Government" and the declaration did not create a central government. The Colonies were therefore not yet the United States. The correct answer to this question is in 1789 when the individual states signed off on the Constitution and agreed to be governed by a Central/Federal Government.

Does Egypt have its independence?

Yes. Since Gamal Abdel Nasser took power in a coup d'etat in 1954, Egypt has had both de jure and de facto independence. Whether that means that the people are truly free is questionable and the current protests in Egypt seem to indicate otherwise.

What is the value of a Jefferson 1 dollar coin?

It's only worth face value. It's made of brass and was issued as part of the Presidential Dollar series. Millions have been made so they're definitely not rare. The dates on the front indicate the years that Jefferson served in office. The minting date (2007) is on the coin's edge.
