Romanticism was a reaction to the Industrial Revolution by focusing on nature, emotions, and imagination to counter the rapid industrialization and urbanization. Romantic artists and writers sought to preserve a sense of beauty, nostalgia, and spiritual connection in response to the materialistic and mechanized aspects of the Industrial Revolution.
Many realists wanted to improve the lives of those they wrote, painted or sang about. They were attempting to shock people with reality to motivate a change.
F. Scott Fitzgerald was not a member of the Lost Generation. Though he was closely associated with writers of the period, such as Ernest Hemingway and Gertrude Stein, he was not considered a part of the Lost Generation in the same way.
Langston Hughes
Langston Hughes, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston, and Alain Locke are most closely associated with the Harlem Renaissance, an intellectual and cultural movement that took place in the 1920s in Harlem, New York. This group of artists and writers contributed significantly to the flourishing of African American literature, art, and jazz music during this time.

Realism allowed them to explore themes of class, morality, and human behavior in a more grounded and authentic manner.
