The Swedish pop group, ABBA, was formed in 1972 consisting of 2 married couples whose first names make up the group name: Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid (Frida). Their first hit as a group was "People Need Love" (June 1972). Their first international success was with the single "Waterloo" in 1974.
Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus, who were members of two of the top bands in Sweden in the 60s, first met and started playing and writing together in 1966. Three years later they both met their future wives, Frida Lyngstad (Benny) and Agnetha Faltskog (Bjorn). Both women were also accomplished performers and they started singing backup on Benny and Bjorn's material.
In April of 1970 the four of them first performed together in public while on holiday in Cyprus. They then performed during the winter of 1970-71 in Swedish clubs, and the following summer in outdoor folk parks. They released their first single (People Need Love) and album (Ring Ring) in the spring of 1972. It was later that summer they first adopted the name "ABBA". In 1974 they achieved their first global hit after they won the Eurovision song contest with "Waterloo".
