British decimal 1 and 2 Pence coins have never contained nickel.

From their introduction in 1971, the 1 and 2 Pence coins were made from bronze, consisting of 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin. From 1992 onwards, they have been made from copper plated steel.

A 25% nickel content is used in the British 5, 10, 20 and 50 Pence coins and gives the coins their silvery appearance. The Five Pound coin and the centre of the Two Pound coin also contains 25% nickel.

The One Pound coin has a 5.5% nickel content.

When was copper removed from British coins?

Copper has not been removed from British coins, but the Royal Mint has not produced pure copper coins since 1860. The current British 1 Penny and 2 Pence coins are made from copper plated* steel since 1992. Previously they were made from bronze which contained 95% copper. (Some bronze 2 pencecoins were issued in 1998 within the circulating coinage). The 5, 10 and 50 Pence coins are made from a cupronickel alloy containing 75% copper and 25% nickel. In 2011, the copper content of the 5 and 10 pence was dropped and subsequent mintage uses nickel plated* steel. The older cupronickel issues will be withdrawn gradually in a longer-term changeover plan. The 20 Pence coins are made from cupronickel containing 84% copper and 16% nickel. The One Pound coins are made from a nickel-brass alloy containing 70% copper, 24.5% zinc and 5.5% nickel. The bimetallic Two Pound coins are made from an outer ring (annulus) of nickel-brass (76% copper, 20% zinc and 4% nickel) and a core of cupronickel (75% copper and 25% nickel). *Full plate cf. cladded coins.

When did the British 5 Pence coin change?

The British cupro-nickel 23.5mm 5 Pence coin changed to a cupro-nickel 18mm 5 Pence coin in 1990. The larger pre-1990 5 Pence coins were withdrawn from circulation and demonetised in 1991. So, unless they are part of a Proof or Uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or Uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, they have little or no value.

Why are coins up to 1991 magnetic?

No British coin is magnetic. Prior to 1992 all British coins were made from non-ferrous metals. The copper-plated steel 1 Penny and 2 Pence coins were first issued in 1992. The nickel-plated steel 5 Pence and 10 Pence coins were first issued in 2011. These are the only British coins in circulation that can be attracted to a magnet since steel is an alloy of iron, a ferrous metal.

What coins have pence on them?

A British coin.

What is a British 1 Penny coin made from and is it magnetic?

No British coin is magnetic. Coins made from steel can be attracted to a magnet. From 1968 to 2011, the British 10 Pence coin was made from a copper-nickel alloy and therefore have no magnetic properties, copper and nickel both being non-ferrous metals. From late 2011, the British 10 Pence coin is made from nickel plated steel which has some magnetic properties similar to the 1 Penny and 2 Pence coins issued from 1992. The move towards coins made from steel is an effort by many countries to reduce the cost of manufacturing coins. Also, the coins are much more durable, even if the plating is not, and may extend the life expectancy of coins well beyond 50 years.
