There are several reasons why cities grew during this period.
-The exponential growth of Industrial Revolution, especially since the Great Exhibition in England.
-The invention of the telegraph by Samuel Morse
-The development of steam engines and expansion of the railways.
-The discovery of gold in the 1850's in California and Victoria. Towns quickly grew up around the diggings to provide the goods and services required by the miners. Even if they didn't find any gold, they still needed food, clothes, picks, spades, sieves, and alcohol. Not every miner found gold, but every service provider made money out of them. Many of the rich families today originally made their fortunes this way.
-After a certain population and resource level was reached a town became self-sustaining and developed into a city.
-The invention of the bicycle. Prior to the bicycle, most people travelled no more than 5 [!] miles from their village.
-The invention of the bicycle resulted in the development of the automobile. Many great motor car firms originally produced bicycles.
-In the same way, the invention of aircraft also was derived from the bicycle. The first powered aircraft to successfully fly was built by the Wright brothers, and they were bicycle manufacturers.
After the First World War started in 1914 cities did notgrow.
