I would consider it a mild winter. But then again, I'm from Minnesota. They had freezing temperatures and snow. They were ill equipped. Had they had proper supplies, it wouldn't have been a problem.
George Washington used Valley Forge as a military camp in the winter of 1777. They arrived in December. It was cold and windy, with temperatures often dipping below freezing and frequent snow. Thousands of men had died by the end of February of 1778, due in large part to the harsh conditions there.
When they had something to eat, they ate it in the trench in the mud and freezing water up to their waists in many cases.

Valley Forge was the Winter quarters for 1777 to 1778 in Pennsylvania for George Washington's army. The location is near Philadelphia. The extreme cold caused the illness and death of many of Washington's soldiers. 11,000 troops wintered there and about 3,000 men died from malnutrition, freezing weather and illness.
