Scrooge was engaged to "Belle" who never rated a last name in the story. They break up over his love of money.
In the book and the 1935 movie "Scrooge" with Seymour Hicks we are shown Belle, her children and her husband living happily without him. In the 1951 "Scrooge" with Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge, she lives out her life working with the poor (marital status unknown).Strangely enough after the ghostly revelation that she is alive and well in London and his reordering of his priorities, he never seeks her out to renew the relationship. Some movie adaptations show Belle being one of Fezziwig's daughters.

A minor conflict in "A Christmas Carol" is Ebenezer Scrooge's disagreement with his nephew Fred over the value of Christmas and the holiday spirit. Fred invites Scrooge to celebrate Christmas with him, but Scrooge stubbornly refuses and chooses to isolate himself instead.
Belle Scrooges betrothed noticed that he haad changed in his attiude since she first met him and they were both poor. Now Scrooges focus was on money and she (Belle) told Scrooge that a new idle, a golden one had taker her place in his heart and therefore she would release him from his promise(to marry her)
This was not his wife. Scrooge didnt marry at all. The person was Belle. Belle was Scrooges fiancee, his betrothed . Belle had seen Scrooge change. He had lost the poor young mans attitude and allowed wealth to take over his life. This drive for more wealth had pushed Belle out of his heart as gold now replaced his love
Belle released Scrooge from his engagement because she felt that "another idol had taken his heart, a golden one". In brief Scrooge had started to pay more attention to his money and making money than to those he had previously loved. Therefore Belle did not want to be with someone who showed no affection to her
Belle had seen that the Young Scrooge had another idle in his heart - money
