∙ 14y agoThe compact fluorescent bulb is a development of the preexisting long tubes used in shops and offices. The first low energy bulbs of the early 80's miniaturised all the components so that it fitted into the same space as an ordinary bulb. They were very heavy due to the laminated metal choke which acted as a current limit. Modern transistors able to withstand over 400 Volts and large back EMF's appeared in the late 80's. They evolved from 'Switch mode' power supplies found in PC's. They are very light due to the elimination of the metal choke but still take time to warm up and the light colour is not the same as filament lamps.
LED lamps are now in car headlights and will overtake compact fluorescent lamps in the near future.
