Sir Edmund Hillary was inspired to climb Mount Everest based on his climbing ability and the belief he could accomplish it. Never gifted athletically, he became hooked on mountain climbing when it proved to be something he did very well. In 1953, the New Zealander joined a British climbing team, and in May, 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Mount Everest.
