Never gifted athletically, he became hooked on mountain climbing when it proved to be something he did very well. In 1953, the New Zealander joined a British climbing team, and in May, 1953, Hillary and Nepalese Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay, reached the summit of Mount Everest.
