In colonial New England shortly before the American War of Independence, a portion of the Militia held themselves ready to respond to gather and serve at a minute's notice. Today we would say they were on "ready alert" but in those days they were simply called "Minute Men." In the 1960s, one of the US ICBM missile systems was called the Minuteman. A subsequent version is still in active service under that name.

In American History, the minutemen were a group of civilans who banded together to form a militia during the Revolutionary War. This militia would go about their daily lives as normal civilians, but in the event of attack by British soldiers would gather up their weapons and assemble for attack. This group over time, became exceptionally effective at combating and annoying the British redcoats and were the colonial first-line of defense.

Sybil Ludington (1761-1839) was "the female Paul Revere" -- although only 16, she spread word to the colonial militias of British Army movements in the third year of the Revolutionary War. She rode to Putnam County, NY and Danbury CT on the night April 26-27, 1777. Hers was the longest ride of any of the riders, who included William Dawes and Paul Revere (1775) and Jack Jouett (1781). Sybil Ludington's ride became necessary because the British had ransacked Danbury destroying militia weapons (the city was a patriot supply center). They were then headed for Fredericksburg NY. A young soldier arrived at Sybil father's house: Colonel Ludington was in charge of the local volunteers . As someone had to go at once to gather the troops, Sybil jumped at the chance . She rode to many villages , informing everyone what was happening . Thanks to her bravery, the patriots were able to force the British back to Long Island Sound in the Battle of Ridgefield.
