I think it's John Cabot.

No one gave him a charter. Henry VII gave him funds and a ship with the direction to go and "finde". Cabot sailed west just as Columbus had and reached Canada. A few years after reaching Canada Henry gave him 5 ships. One had problems before they left the British Isles and sailed to Ireland. The other 4 sailed on, but the historical record is incomplete. It has always been thought they were lost at sea, but there is some proof that a priest on board one ship may have started a settlement in Nova Scotia. There is also a secondary source that shows Cabot may have survived the trip and was alive in Bristol, England in 1500.
in 1492 columbus sailed the ocean blue. and in 2012 columbus is dead and i became your very own poopsack.
She was 5 years old when she went to England!!!!!!!!!!
St Brendan sailed north and west from Ireland, and is believed to have visited Iceland and possibly Greenland. The is some evidence that he may have reached the New England coast some 5-600 years before Leif Ericson.
