The stones were probably placed on sledges and hauled by a gang of slaves tugging on ropes made from papyrus or palm fronds. For one the 2.5 ton blocks used on the Great Pyramid required about twenty men. The larger stones would obviously take more. It is very unlikely that animals were used. It would be very difficult to control oxen on a narrow roadway several hundred feet off the ground. Anyhow slaves were far more plentiful.
