Moreton Island, and nearby Moreton Bay, which lie off the southeast coast of Queensland, are named after the James Douglas, the Earl of Morton.James Cook was the one who first named Moreton Bay, when he charted the east coast of Australia in 1770. In 1779, Matthew Flinders then named Moreton Island, which formed part of the eastern border of the bay.As to why these two places are named "Moreton" and not "Morton" - there was a spelling mistake in the Hawkesworth edition of James Cook's Journal, and it was never altered. Flinders perpetuated the problem when he named Moreton island, also with the "e". This form - Moreton - became the accepted spelling.
