Edgar Allan Poe was adopted by John Allan and his wife Frances Allan. Their relationship was complex, as John Allan provided for Poe's education but had a strained relationship with him due to Poe's rebellious nature and financial struggles. Frances Allan, on the other hand, was more nurturing and had a closer bond with Poe.

No one adopted Edgar Allan Poe. Edgar Poe was born on January 19, 1809. His mother died on December 8, 1811 and his father died on or about December 10, 1811. Poe was taken in and raised by foster parents John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia. Poe was never legally adopted therefore he did not take his foster parents last name as his own last name. He did use it as his middle name thereby coming to be known as Edgar Allan Poe.

No one legally "adopted" Poe. John and Frances Allan took him into their home and raised him as his foster parents shortly after both his natural parents died on December, 1811.
