In India, there are no specific age limits set for judges of the Supreme Court. However, they are required to retire at the age of 65. To be appointed as a Supreme Court judge, a candidate must typically be a citizen of India and have served as a High Court judge for at least five years or have been an advocate of a High Court for at least ten years.
The first judge of the High Court in India was Sir Elijah Impey, who was appointed in 1774. He served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William in Bengal, which was the first High Court established in India. This marked the beginning of the formal judicial system in the country under British rule.
The Qualifications are: >5 years as a judge of high court. >10 years as an advocate in high court. >5 years as and advocate in high court. >10 years as an advocate in supreme court. >A PhD degree in the discipline of law.
1. Person must be Citizen of India. 2. As a lawyer hold a practice of 10 years or more in succession in the High Court(s) of India. or 3. Have 5 years as judge of High Court (one or more). 4. Or Be a distinguished jurist in the opinion of the Parliament of India.
