He left very specific instructions in his will, and the disciplines for which there would be a Nobel prize were spelled out: physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature and peace. There have been some debates over the years about adding a new prize, but the Board of Directors decided to remain true to the instructions Nobel left.
