I don't think they are "friends" per se, but they can co-exist and probably do so for the benefit of survival (through hunting). They are not friends, but enemies. Lions will kill cheetah cubs if they can find them, and even adult cheetahs that are sick or lame and cannot outrun the lion. Cheetahs have been known to kill unguarded lion cubs on rare occasions. Lions will also drive cheetahs from their kills.
