"Nicolaitans" were [and are] the followers of the doctrines of "Nicolas" [see Acts 6:5]... who believe in "faith without works;" they believe in "leading lives of unrestrained indulgence" -- that God's laws are "done away" and that subsequently, there is no sin, because "sin is the transgression of the law" [I John 3:4].
There is no "repentance" to God in this "carnal minded attitude;" repentance, being sorry for having disobeyed God, is the "first step" to Salvation:
"...REPENT ye, and believe the gospel [Good News]." (Mark 1:15)
"...REPENT, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of [past] sins..." (Acts 2:38).
"...that REPENTANCE and remission of sins should be preached in His name among all nations..." (Luke 24:47).
The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is, instead, the mere continuation of one's past indulgence in sin [breaking God's laws]... only, without the guilt or remorse for one's disobedience to his Creator.
Jesus reveals to John in His letter to the church in Pergamos, that this "doctrine of the Nicolaitans, WHICH THING I HATE..." [Rev.2:15] -- is to be REPENTED OF! [verse 16].
This doctrine is prevalent today among many professing Christian denominations who teach that "believing" in Christ "without works" is all that's necessary for Salvation. These "Nicolaitans" would like to rip the book of "James" out of The Bible:
"Dear brothers and sisters, what's the use of saying you have Faith if you don't prove it by your actions? That kind of Faith can't save anyone... It isn't enough just to have Faith. Faith that doesn't show itself by good deeds is no Faith at all - it is DEAD AND USELESS. Now someone may argue, 'Some people have Faith; others have good deeds.' I say, 'I can't see your Faith if you don't have good deeds, but I will show you my Faith THROUGH my good deeds.'
"Do you still think it's enough just to BELIEVE that there is one God? Well, even the demons believe this, and THEY TREMBLE IN TERROR! " (James 2:14-19 NLT New Living Translation)
The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is alive and well among many of the modern professing Christian denominations, today. They profess "Faith" in Christ... but their Faith is rendered "useless" and vain due to their absence of good deeds [works]. A thing which God hates.

Roman Catholic AnswerNo. The priesthood of believers, as St. Peter is talking about, are to make spiritual sacrifices. The "professional" priesthood, if you want to use that term, it should be the ordainedpriesthood is constituted by Jesus Christ to offer the sacrifice of the Cross and so make Its graces available to all. Our Blessed Lord is the One mediator, all other mediators only participate in His priesthood, but to different degrees, and in different manners. So you are talking about two different things. Protestant AnswerYes it definitely does. That is what the Reformation was all about. 1Peter 2:5 you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house for a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.(Also see [Exod 19:6]; [Prov 9:1]; [Isa 61:6]; [Isa 66:21]; [1Cor 3:9]; [Eph 2:21]; [Eph 2:22]; [1Tim 3:15]; )A professional priesthood is condemmed by Jesus Christ:-Rev 2 (v.6) Yet you do have this: You hate the practices of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.Scofield explains that the Nicolaitans were:-NicolaitanesFrom nikao, "to conquer," and laos, "the people," or "laity." There is no ancient authority for a sect of the Nicolaitanes. If the word is symbolic it refers to the earliest form of the notion of a priestly order, or "clergy," which later divided an equal brotherhood Matthew 23:8 into "priests" and "laity." What in Ephesus was "deeds" Revelation 2:6 had become in Pergamos a "doctrine Revelation 2:15. e. But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate: ... But who are the Nicolaitans and what were their deeds? The doctrine of the Nicolaitans is also condemned in Rev. 2:15, and in that passage is related to immorality and idolatry.i. Irenaeus (writing in the late second century) described what he knew of the Nicolaitans: "The Nicolaitanes are the followers of that Nicolas who was one of the seven first ordained to the diaconate by the apostles. They lead lives of unrestrained indulgence. The character of these men is plainly pointed out in the Apocalypse of John, as teaching that it is a matter of indifference to practice adultery, and to eat things sacrifice to idols." (Against Heresies, book 1, chapter 26. From the Ante Nicean Fathers Volume 1, page 352)ii. Hippolytus, a student of Irenaeus (writing in the early third century) associated the Nicolaitans with the Gnostics: "There are, however, among the Gnostics diversities of opinion . . . But Nicolaus has been a cause of the wide-spread combination of these wicked men. [He] departed from correct doctrine, and was in the habit of inculcating indifferency of both life and food." (Refutation of all Heresies, book 7, chapter 24; ANF volume 5, page 115)iii. Others have emphasized the root meanings of the words that make up the name Nicolaitans. Nikao-laos means literally "to conquer the people." Based on this, some point to presumptuous claims of apostolic authority and to the heart that sets up hierarchies and separates the "clergy" from the "laity." Perhaps the Nicolaitans fulfilled all these aspects, being both an idolatrous immorality and a presumptuous, hierarchical, "hidden mysteries" system typical of Gnosticism.
