If you read chapter 13 you will see Jesus is talking about the scribes and pharisees of the day.

ADDITIONALLY:

Since God's Word is "Living" and Timeless, we can also read Jesus' words as being as pertinent today regarding today's "blind guides" as it was to that time, there and then. A guide is a LEADER, as the scribes and Pharisees were in their day.

They were trained in the Scriptures and responsible to God to teach the people in the paths of God's Righteous way of living. But the single most effective way to teach someone is BY EXAMPLE; of which Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His day. They could piously rattle off the Scriptures... but as said leaders of God's people, they were the WORST HYPOCRITES:

"...'The scribes and Pharisees sit in Moses; seat [NLT: '...the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees are the official interpreters of the Scriptures...']: all therefore whatsoever they BID YOU OBSERVE, THAT OBSERVE and DO; but DO NOT ye AFTER THEIR WORKS...'" (Matt.23:2-3).

"'WOE UNTO YOU, SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, HYPOCRITES!... WOE UNTO YOU, SCRIBES AND PHARISEES, HYPOCRITES!... WOE UNTO YOU, YE BLIND GUIDES... YE FOOLS AND BLIND...'" (verses 13-17).

The same warning applies to this world's modern professing so-called "Christian" leadership, which millions of people assume know the Scriptures... but don't. Jesus' very first warning to His disciples regarding the signs of the last days is of FALSE Christianity! A different name applied to the very same type of BLIND... MISLEADING... LEADERSHIP!

"...'Take heed that no man DECEIVE you. For MANY SHALL COME IN MY NAME, saying, I AM CHRIST...'" (Matt.24:4).

That can be taken TWO WAYS: for some people come saying that they are ACTUALLY Jesus Christ [I am Christ]. And while some will follow them, not that MANY fall for it. The other way to take it is in the sense that MANY "have come" in Jesus' name "PROFESSING, ADMITTING, CONFESSING that HE is THE CHRIST." They preach Jesus' name... things ABOUT Him... stories ABOUT Him... with little or no biblical substance.

Jesus warned His disciples... and you and I, today, through His written, recorded Word... that these MANY who shall come [and who HAVE come to us down through the centuries]: "...SHALL DECEIVE MANY.'" (verse 5)

Blind guides aren't limited to the days when Jesus walked the earth as a mortal man. In this Satan-guided and -led world, there has never been a shortage of "blind guides" to lead men astray. The trick is having the Wisdom, Knowledge, and Understanding of God's Word IN US, that we might be able to discern who the blind guides are and who are the ones who are able to see the Truth of God's Word, and GUIDE others toward Righteous paths by their own actions [examples].

God speaks of both religious leadership [prophets] in His Word as well as political leadership [princes] as "blind guides" that lead His people astray... and there's no particular era or century or decade whereby this has not been extant in the world.

"Why do you refuse to turn from all this running after other gods? But you say, 'Don't waste your breath. I have fallen in love with these foreign gods, and I can't stop loving them now!'

Like a thief, Israel [America, Britain, any nation in the world that professes Jesus' name] feels shame ONLY WHEN SHE GETS CAUGHT. KINGS, OFFICIALS, PRIESTS, and PROPHETS - ALL ARE ALIKE in this." (Jer.2:25-26 NLT New Living Translation)

The "blind guides" Jesus is talking about in His Living, Timeless Word, the books of The Bible that shall be opened on Judgment Day to Judge ALL OF MANKIND, are ultimately THE LEADERS OF PEOPLE EVERYWHERE [whom He created to one day be born into His Divine, Immortal Family as HIS CHILDREN].

God charges all leaders everywhere [whether they are political, religious, or just plain PARENTS] NOT TO BE BLIND GUIDES, but to teach their children HIS LAWS, which are Laws of Love, Respect, and Loyalty to HIM and for one another:

"...these are THE COMMANDMENTS, the STATUTES, and the JUDGMENTS, which the LORD your God COMMANDED TO TEACH YOU, that YE MIGHT DO THEM in the land... That thou MIGHTEST FEAR THE LORD thy God, to KEEP ALL HIS STATUTES and HIS COMMANDMENTS, which I command thee, thou, AND THY SON, and thy SON'S SON, ALL THE DAYS OF THY LIFE..." (Deut.6:1-2).

How many of the HUNDREDS of "blind guides" of modern professing "Christian" denominations today DON'T TEACH God's Commandments; but rather teach that they are DONE AWAY WITH!?!

Did blind, hypocritical religious [or political] leadership die out with the scribes and Pharisees, or is it alive and well and still living in the hearts and minds of men today? God's Word is QUICK [ALIVE - Heb.4:12] and is FOR ALL TIME.

Jesus' message, while aimed at those leaders of the people of His day when He walked the earth as a mortal man, is A WARNING for all men throughout the time God has allotted to man who think they want to be a LEADER. And today, in the light of Jesus' warning to beware of "FALSE CHRIST'S" [modern religious teachers, pastors and ministers]... the warning to beware of "blind guides" hasn't changed.

The warning is written in the books: Judgment Day is coming upon everyone, and those who would be the leaders of men shall be judged more stringently than everyone else:

"DO NOT BECOME MANY TEACHERS, my brothers, because YOU KNOW WELL we teachers SHALL BE JUDGED BY A SEVERER STANDARD than others..." (James 3:1 MNT Montgomery New Testament)
