As of 2010, there have only been four female Supreme Court justices:

  1. Justice Sandra Day O'Connor was the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court; President Reagan nominated her in 1981, and she retired in January, 2006;
  2. Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, President Clinton appointed Ginsberg in 1993 and she remains on the Court;
  3. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama appointed Sotomayor in 2009 and she remains on the Court;
  4. Justice Elena Kagan, President Obama appointed Kagan in 2010; she will serve her first Term in 2010.
