The long list of Governors begins when Alaska was named the District of Alaska on 17 May 1884. Seven different Governors held that position by appointment of the President. They were John Henry Kinkead Alfred Swineford Lyman Knapp James Sheakley John Green Brady Wilford Hoggatt and Walter Clark.
